Smyrna High School Schedule Change Guidelines

The scheduling process at Smyrna High School is designed to help students and parents, in collaboration with the school counselor, select appropriate courses and alternates that support graduation, college readiness, and career preparation. Once student schedules are finalized based on course requests, school staff begin assigning teachers, ordering instructional materials, and preparing classrooms for the year.

Therefore, no schedule changes will be permitted once schedules are finalized, except under the following specific circumstances:

    • To balance class sizes and prevent overcrowding, as determined by school administration
    • As a result of a disciplinary action determined by the administration
    • To make a level change, with parental consent
    • To add Career Work Experience, Student Aide, or Late Arrive/Early Release. This option is for students with a 12th grade classification only.
    • When a student does not meet the prerequisite for a course
    • When a student’s schedule lacks a course required for graduation
    • If a student is assigned to a teacher with whom they previously failed a course—every effort will be made to assign the student to a different teacher

Schedule changes are made only for academic reasons. The following examples are not acceptable reasons for a schedule change:

    • Student/parent does not like the teacher
    • Student does not like the teacher’s instructional style
    • Believing the teacher is “too hard” or “too strict”
    • Teacher assigns too much work
    • Failing a class
    • Wanting to change lunch periods

    Course Selection Considerations

Because changes are limited, students and parents should carefully review course options and requirements before finalizing requests each year. When selecting courses, consider:

    • Appropriate course level (College Preparatory, Honors, Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment)
    • Career pathways and postsecondary goals
    • Graduation requirements
    • NCAA eligibility (for student-athletes)

If you have any questions, please contact your school counselor.
