Buildings & Grounds

The Smyrna School District Buildings and Grounds Department is dedicated to ensuring our students and staff learn and work in environments that are safe, clean, and well-maintained. Each day, our caring and committed custodial staff support all eight Smyrna School District schools, helping to create clean, welcoming spaces for students, staff, and visitors.

The appearance and functionality of our outdoor spaces are maintained by our dedicated grounds team, who oversee hundreds of acres of district property. Their responsibilities include grass cutting and trimming, landscaping projects, athletic field maintenance, and snow removal to ensure safe access throughout the year.

In addition, the district employs skilled trade mechanics who support the daily operations of our facilities. These professionals are responsible for the upkeep and repair of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting systems, ensuring our schools remain safe, efficient, and ready to support teaching and learning.

Buildings & Grounds other areas of responsibilities includes:

  • The development and management of construction projects, maintenance and repair projects
  • Oversee service/maintenance contracts and contractors to insure services are rendered appropriately
  • Compliance of applicable federal, state, and local regulations related to district facilities
  • Oversee and adhere to standards as outline under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA)

Smyrna School District recognizes that good indoor air quality (IAQ) is essential to the health, comfort, and productivity of our students and staff. The District is committed to providing a safe and healthy work and learning environment and to investigating complaints that may be related to poor IAQ.

What is Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)?

IAQ refers to the quality of the air within and around our school buildings, especially as it affects the health and comfort of occupants. IAQ concerns may include temperature extremes, elevated humidity, stuffy air, odors, and mold.

Transient odors, such as: vehicle exhaust from outside, roofing repair work, paint, or construction odors do not necessarily indicate poor IAQ. While these odors may cause temporary discomfort such as headaches or eye/nose irritation, they typically do not pose a long-term health risk.

Addressing IAQ Concerns

Any staff member or visitor who wishes to submit a concern regarding indoor air quality at Smyrna School District facilities should do so formally and in writing. Complaints are investigated by the Buildings & Grounds Department and may include assessments of temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide levels, mold, and other relevant factors.

Repairs, equipment adjustments, and additional evaluations are conducted by our Buildings & Grounds team, or by outside environmental contractors when necessary. Special room cleaning and disinfection may also be performed by custodial staff.

Staff members who suspect an IAQ problem should complete the Indoor Air Quality Complaint Form and submit it directly. This form is automatically directed to the Buildings & Grounds Department. Staff should also inform their immediate supervisor when submitting a complaint.

Concerns specifically related to temperature and humidity should be reported through the Buildings & Grounds online maintenance request form.

To maintain HIPAA compliance, any medical condition or protected information must be documented and coordinated through the Smyrna School District Human Resources Office.

For questions, please contact the Buildings & Grounds Department at 302‑653‑3132.
