March 15, 2025 Referendum - Not Approved

A referendum is a request of taxpayers to support school districts in operations and capital projects through a ballot initiative. The Smyrna School District scheduled a operational referendum for March 15th, 2025.

The Smyrna School District needs an operational referendum to ensure our schools have the resources to meet the needs of our rapidly growing community. Enrollment is increasing from 6,800 to an expected 7,800 students. The referendum would raise $5.4 million in its first year, supporting:

Passing this referendum is essential to continue the progress we’ve made and ensure all students have the tools, resources, and support they need to succeed.

Teacher and staff salaries vary based on factors such as experience, education level, and additional credentials. However, when looking at starting salaries for new teachers, Smyrna School District ranks at the lower end in Kent County and remains in the bottom tier across most salary scales in New Castle County.

If the referendum passes, teachers will receive a salary increase in both the first and second year, making our pay more competitive with surrounding districts. This is why we need your vote to support our educators and the future of Smyrna School District!

The current tax will increase on average by $277.00 for a New Castle County property in the district assessed at $70,500 (average market value is $300,000) and a Kent County property in the district assessed at $300,000. (Please See Tax Chart Below)

All U.S. citizens, 18 years or older, and residents of the Smyrna School District are eligible to vote for the referendum. You do not have to own a home or have students in the District to vote. Voters will need proof of address on the day of the polls.

• Passport
• Utility Bill
