Goals and Strategies for Using Technology to Improve Education

Overarching Technology Goal

"Technology will be used throughout the district to help every student meet or exceed the standards."

District Goals

Each classroom will utilize multi-media teaching and presentation workstations. This workstation will run interactive video, CD-ROM, hypertext, and other multi-media software. In certain areas, such as music, the arts, science labs and graphics classrooms, the teaching station includes interfaces specific to the subject at hand. The station has the capability to store and print documents and graphics, and to communicate with school-based and off-site databases and electronic mail service.

Teachers will have on-going professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills through technology.

The district will adopt an integrated technology approach to teaching that incorporates state standards at all grade levels.

Each classroom will have a single computer for use by the teacher for administrative support and instructional purposes.

Staff members have access, from their work areas, to appropriate administrative data such as grades, attendance, and student schedules, in a manner that facilitates their record keeping and information gathering.

Many of the above-mentioned functions are reachable from home or other locations through the web or maybe dial-up access

The district will provide for district wide technology infrastructure.

Teacher Goals

Easy-to-use electronic mail will be available in each classroom throughout the day for teachers to communicate with each other, specialists, administrators, or students.

Teachers can, from their classroom or work area, search and retrieve library and research resources, both on and off-site through commercial information services.

Teachers can publish assignments, enrichment activities, and examples of student work to the school’s web page.

Teachers can access and run the most appropriate instructional software, at the teaching station in their classroom.

Student Goals

In their classrooms, students will have access to word-processing, desktop publishing, and desktop presentation tools to help them to prepare assignments and teaching materials.

All students will have access regardless of physical or other disabilities.

Students will have on-line access from the classroom to research information, such as on-line encyclopedias, reference works, and collections of academic information.

Students will have access to subject-specific tools, such as music MIDI instruments, computer-aided design and drafting tools, desktop publishing tools, and multimedia development tools.

Students have access to interactive multimedia learning and production stations, where they can review material, conduct research, and prepare reports and presentations that combine text, graphic sound, music, motion video, and still images.

Students can access for review, practice, simulation, and complex problem-solving, a wide range of instructional programs, from any student or classroom workstation.

Students will use a variety of computer interfaces in their science laboratory courses, including temperature, pressure, electrical, light, and sound measuring devices; frequency counters and scales; all linked to a graphic display with an immediate printed output.

Students will be provided with distance learning opportunities.
